It's (NOT) About the Essay

It's (NOT)  About the Essay

Applying to colleges is often a stressful process for students, especially when they need to craft a compelling personal statement. As an independent education consultant, Diane Cohen has assisted her students for over a decade on how to share their voices in the college application essays, which is one of Diane’s favorite parts of the college admission process. In this “how to” book, students gain a personal insight into Diane's outlook on several topics while learning how to approach thought-provoking college admission prompts. Parents, who should not be involved in their student's essay-writing process, can gain insight into what it entails, which is typically significantly different from their personal experience from decades past.

This diverse collection of essays offers students (and parents) samples of personal narratives that "show" versus "tell". Included are some of Diane's favorite Common Application essays that past students authorized her publishing (of course, anonymously). Also included are several supplemental essay prompts (the creative ones) which Diane wrote herself. It’s one thing to edit students’ work; it’s another to personally undertake the unique challenge of writing essays.

While the focus of the book supports It’s About the Essay and its importance, the content also addresses various factors of the overall admission process. At many of the most selective colleges and universities, the essays are one factor in what typically is a holistic process. Success is not just contingent on writing great essays, as is suggested by It’s NOT About the Essay.

This book serves as a valuable resource, and light-hearted read, for rising seniors who often find personal essay writing to be an intimidating process.

For over a decade, Diane has successfully assisted metro Atlanta high school students in navigating the college admission process with demonstrated success in helping them be admitted to their schools of choice. Diane's practice is career focused, not simply admission focused. In assisting her students, she has drawn upon her deep knowledge of the college admission landscape and her relevant professional experience at American Express in corporate staffing and development, leadership training, as well as executive search recruiting in multiple functional areas. Looking beyond admissions, Diane is focused on using her fact-based knowledge and keen intuition to help students in finding their best fit.

Since Diane is the sole proprietor of her retainer-based practice, she is limited as to how many students she can take on. Therefore, she is hoping her book can help those who might need assistance with the essay writing part of the process that many students tend to find to be most challenging.

Diane has a Bachelor Science degree in Psychology from Fordham University and a Master’s degree in Human Resources Management from Cornell University School of Industrial and Labor Relations.
